5-Week Workshop · Fall 2026 · Grades 6 to 8

Number Theory for Young Problem Solvers

Five Thursday evenings on the ideas behind whole numbers: factors, primes, GCF and LCM, remainders, and digit puzzles. These topics show up on every AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS test, and they build number sense that carries into algebra.

The five weeks

Each week has one clear topic. Students take guided notes, practice in class, and finish with a short exit ticket. Weekly homework includes real AMC 8 problems on that topic.

01

Factors, Multiples, and Divisibility

Finding every factor of a number without missing any, and using divisibility rules to check large numbers quickly. factor pairs · multiples · divisibility rules · short diagnostic

02

Primes and Prime Factorization

Breaking any number into its prime building blocks, then using those blocks to spot perfect squares and count divisors. primes and composites · factor trees · perfect squares · counting divisors

03

GCF and LCM

Finding the greatest common factor and least common multiple, and deciding which one a word problem is really asking for. GCF · LCM · GCF × LCM fact · word problems · Thanksgiving take-home set

04

Remainders and Repeating Patterns

Using remainders to answer questions about very large numbers: what day of the week it will be, or the last digit of a huge power. division with remainders · days of the week · cycles · units digits of powers

05

Digits, Palindromes, and Parity

Digit puzzles, palindromes, and even/odd reasoning, then a mixed review and a short final assessment that brings all five weeks together. place value · digit sums · palindromes · even and odd · final assessment
