5-Week Course · Fall 2026 · Grades 6 to 8

Algebra built for AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS

Five focused Thursday evenings on the algebra that decides contest scores: word problems, ratios, rates, sequences, and the shortcuts that save minutes per question.

The five weeks

Ninety minutes a week is not enough time to cover everything, so the course focuses on the algebra skills that matter most in competition math. Every session opens with problems from previous weeks so key ideas stay fresh.

01

Words to Equations

Turning a paragraph into something solvable: assigning variables well, working backward, and setting up two unknowns at once. linear equations · systems · age and coin problems

02

Ratios and Percents

Scaling quantities, comparing parts to wholes, and undoing a percent change rather than repeating it. proportions · percent increase and decrease · reverse percent

03

Rates and Work

Distance, speed, and time, including why average speed is almost never the average of two speeds, then two people or two pipes working together. distance-rate-time · average speed · relative speed · combined rates

04

Exponents and Sequences

Spotting the pattern instead of grinding out the arithmetic: rewriting powers to a common base and recognizing sequence structure. exponent rules · common base · arithmetic and geometric sequences

05

Algebra Shortcuts

Contest strategies that save time, especially recognizing structure and solving directly for the expression the question asks about. factoring · difference of squares · defined operations · timed mixed set
